1909-O Half Eagle, AU58
Problem-Free Example
Of This 20th Century Rarity
1909-O $5 AU58 PCGS. CAC. "Feverish demand" is how Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth characterize the numismatic fervor for the 1909-O half eagle, an anachronism as the last (and only) Indian Head five produced at the New Orleans Mint, which would close for coinage forever in the same year. The 1909-O holds a number of records. It is:

--the last gold coin of any denomination struck in New Orleans;
--the only O-mint Indian Head gold issue of any denomination;
--the only 20th century O-mint half eagle of any design;
--the last half eagle struck in New Orleans since 1894;
--the lowest-mintage Indian Head five, at 34,200 pieces; and
--a key to the Indian Head half eagles in all grades, even though a couple of other issues are rarer in high Mint State levels.

All of the foregoing factors make the 1909-O popular among a multitude of collectors. This upper-end AU gives the collector excellent value in this major 20th century rarity. Only the slightest high-point friction is seen on each side, the strike details are strong overall including a well-formed mintmark, and abrasions are small and widely scattered.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25ZK, PCGS# 8515)
