1865-S Double Eagle, Stunning MS64
Small S, From the
Brother Jonathan
1865-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Breen-7221. Small S. Brother Jonathan 547. The year 1865 was unfortunate in that the United States saw two disastrous shipwrecks. The S.S. Republic sank on October 25, 1865, in a hurricane off the Georgia coast; part of its treasure was recovered in 2003, including several hundred examples each of the 1865 and 1865-S double eagles, mostly Mint State pieces. The S.S. Brother Jonathan, plying the Pacific Ocean routes between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, crashed into an uncharted rock near Crescent City, California, and sank on July 30, 1865. When recovered in the 1990s, the Brother Jonathan wreck included about 250 examples of the 1865-S twenty, again largely Uncirculated coins (expectedly so). This piece is specifically provenanced to the Brother Jonathan, as noted above. Deep, even reddish-gold surfaces show engaging, bountiful luster, a stunning coin. The blue-label PCGS holder with seven-digit certification number and Brother Jonathan inscription date this slab to the late 1990s-early 2000s era.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 269V, PCGS# 8944)
