1839 Restrike Gobrecht Dollar, Toned PR63
Judd-104, Minimal Reverse Die Cracking
1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR63 NGC. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (the head Liberty is opposite the F in OF). The reverse shows just one area of die cracking, through the tops of MERI. There is no evidence of cracks connecting TE or through the bottom of LAR. If we neatly divide Originals and Restrikes into periods with no die cracks (Originals struck in 1839) and those with reverse die cracks (Restrikes from the late 1850s and 1860s), then this piece would fall into the early Restrike period before all the cracks developed.

This is an example whose obverse is noticeably brighter than the reverse. The color on each side is also different with deeper shadings on the reverse. The obverse was obviously cleaned at one time, the reverse is not obviously hairlined. Deep gray-blue and golden shadings are seen over each side. The strike is strong on Liberty's head but less well-defined on the foot, star centrils, and highest point of the eagle's breast. A couple of navy-blue spots of color are seen below the eagle and another above its tailfeathers, and there is an identifying small area of pinscratching also located in the field below the eagle.
