Description:
1804 Quarter Eagle, Bright AU55
14 Reverse Stars, BD-2
Companion to 14 Stars Dime
1804 $2 1/2 14 Star Reverse AU55 NGC. BD-2, R.4. This Choice AU example of the BD-2 1804 14 Star Reverse quarter eagle would be a perfect counterpart to the 1804 14 Star Reverse dime in the present sale, certified MS63 by NGC and now the finest known. The 13 Star and 14 Star Reverse dies of 1804 were each used to strike both silver dime and gold quarter eagle denominations, although the 14 Stars dimes and 13 Stars quarter eagles are rarer. The BD-2 14 Stars quarter eagle is nonetheless classified as "very scarce" at R.4.

The surfaces on this piece are bright greenish-gold, showing a few minor marks consistent with a short spate of circulation. The only singular mark is a thin scrape through the hair of Liberty, although some smaller abrasions appear in the right obverse field. Planchet adjustment marks appear at the rims on the obverse, and a tiny curved indent appears on the bust. Much of the dentilation on the reverse rim is missing or weakly struck, as are the lower details on the eagle's tail feathers and legs. These weak points are mostly from an inexact strike, as little actual wear appears on either side. No obvious die cracks appear. Census: 11 in 55, 27 finer (2/13).
