Description:
Mint State 1799 Small Stars Five, BD-6
Advanced Die States on Both Sides
1799 $5 Small Stars Reverse MS60 NGC. BD-6, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. This rare variety can be easily distinguished by the unusual reverse, where the uppermost stars appear to be missing some of their points, the effect caused by extensive die polishing. While the 1799 half eagles can be classified as Large Reverse Stars and Small Reverse Stars, this particular die variety should be called Tiny Reverse Stars to differentiate it. Of the nine varieties of 1799 half eagle, all are rare as individual varieties, but the BD-6 is the most "available" of the lot, while still quite rare; some of the other varieties are High R.7, or four to six known pieces. Each side shows a number of die cracks as outlined in Bass-Dannreuther. There are no visible adjustment marks on either side, and the eye appeal is high-end for the assigned grade, despite the single rim bump at star 11 on the obverse that seems to be the determinant. Rich reddish patina surrounds the devices.
