Description:
1805 Half Eagle, Eye-Appealing AU55
BD-2, Late Obverse Die State
1805 $5 AU55 NGC. CAC. Close Date, BD-2, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State g/d. The 1805 Close Date, BD-2, shows an obverse die that was first used for the BD-1 (with a different reverse), where it developed one die crack from the 0 in the date through the head and to the cap, and a die scratch from the obverse field above the cap to star 8 (Obverse State c). Then in its second use with the BD-2 reverse (leaf free of I in AMERICA, IT apart), the obverse die developed several new cracks, making the obverse die state far more advanced than that of the reverse. In its second use (and on this coin), there is a second crack, bisecting, running from star 13 through the head to star 4; another crack from the rim through the B to the forward highest curl; and yet another from the rim four dentils left of the 1 in the date, through the lowest hair curl, joining the first crack at the rear drapery. Other cracks join the 1 and 8 in the date and star 1 to the rim (at two points). The reverse shows the State d crack from the U to the arrows to the tail feathers, but none from the edge to the E in UNITED.

The surfaces otherwise retain considerable luster and are medium orange-gold with much eye appeal. A few parallel planchet adjustment marks are visible on Liberty's face, and the letter H scratched into the right obverse field.
