1843-D Medium D Five, MS63
Second-Finest Graded
1843-D $5 Medium D MS63 NGC. Variety 11-G. One seldom sees a Dahlonega gold coin of any sort with the NGC Star designation for superior eye appeal, but this Select 1843-D is such a piece. The 1843-D half eagles were struck in a large amount of 98,452 pieces, and they are among the best-struck D-mint fives. However, many examples are heavily abraded as well. The Medium D is seen more often than the Small D (Variety 10-F).

This Select Mint State example shows, as do all examples of this variety, tiny die lumps at stars 1-2, star 12, and over the date. This piece is well but not fully struck, showing full star radials but slight softness on Liberty's high-point hair. The reverse strike is impeccable, however, and neither side shows any singular marks, putting this piece into the small minority. The lustrous surfaces are medium yellow-orange and the eye appeal is superlative throughout. A small as-made planchet flaw appears at the obverse rim at 9 o'clock. This is the finest-graded at NGC, and only a single MS64 PCGS example is finer. Census: 6 in 63 (1 in 63 ), 0 finer (3/13).
