1884 Gold Dollar, PR67 Cameo
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1884 G$1 PR67 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Despite a published mintage of 1,006 proof gold dollars dated 1884, complementing a small business-strike mintage of 5,230 pieces, only a fraction of that number of proofs are known today, Bowers putting the estimate at 100 to 140 pieces. The author writes in his Guide Book on the series:

"For this and other high-mintage Proofs through 1889, it is likely that jewelers, who had an insatiable demand for gold dollars, but who could not get them through banking channels, simply paid a small premium and bought Proofs--which were then incorporated into bracelets, brooches, etc."

This Superb Gem Cameo PCGS example is among the finest survivors of the issue at that service, tied with three other Cameos for this ultimate grade (4/13). The finest Deep Cameo at PCGS is a single PR65 example, although NGC has certified 11 submissions in PR67 Cameo with two finer. A slight orange-peel texture is visible in the fields, but the surfaces overall are impeccable and deeply contrasted. The bold date repunching on the reverse is characteristic of the issue.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EU, PCGS# 87634)
