Description:
1859 Three Dollar, MS66
Tied for Finest Graded
1859 $3 MS66 NGC. By 1859 the bloom was off the rose for the three dollar gold series -- if, indeed, there was much to begin with -- and collector enthusiasm had waned greatly since the debut offering of the 1854 pieces. The 1859 mintage of business strikes was meager, at 15,589 coins, but far-lower production figures were in the offing.

The early circulation strikes in the series were saved in numbers far fewer than those of later issues, where even-lower mintages garnered dealer and collector interest. (There were also many more of both in the 1880s than in the late 1850s.) Bowers estimates that only 70 to 90 Mint State examples survive of this issue. The present Premium Gem is among the few finest ever seen; both NGC and PCGS have seen only two submissions each at this grade level, and none are finer (4/13). The apricot-gold surfaces boast generous luster and great eye appeal throughout both sides, showing a mix of the prooflike reflectivity and frosty areas typical of these coins. There are simply no mentionable distractions on this stunning coin.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25MD, PCGS# 7979)
