1814/3 Half Eagle, BD-1, MS61
Low-Mintage Overdate
1814/3 $5 MS61 NGC. CAC. BD-1, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. Only 15,454 Capped Bust Left half eagles were struck in 1814, with a single die variety known for the date. All examples seen are overdates, with the remnants of an undertype 3 visible at the top of the final digit in the date. This coin is from a late state of the dies, with die cracks and clash marks on both sides. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to strike the BD-2 variety in 1813 and the rare and famous 1815 half eagle the following year. The 1814/3 is a very scarce issue in its own right, as the surviving population numbers no more than 80-100 pieces in all grades.

This coin is an attractive Mint State specimen with well-detailed design elements and vivid orange and rose-gold surfaces that display much original mint luster. A scattering of minor contact marks on both sides explains the grade. Census: 10 in 61, 28 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25PN, PCGS# 8117)
