Description:
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, AU50
Two Leaves, B-1, BB-21 Variety
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves AU50 PCGS. B-1, BB-21, R.2. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. The 1795 Flowing Hair silver dollar claims a mintage of 160,295 pieces, with 17 die varieties known for the date and type. Another two die varieties are known with the Draped Bust obverse, which replaced the Flowing Hair design later in the year. This coin represents the relatively available BB-21 variety, with the 7 in the date struck over an errant 1 and a leaf ending directly below the second S in STATES on the reverse. The obverse die was used to strike the 1795 BB-21, BB-22, and BB-23 varieties. The reverse was employed on BB-20, BB-21, and BB-24.
The coin offered here is a delightful AU50 example, with sharply detailed design elements that show only a trace of softness on the eagle's breast. The mostly brilliant surfaces retain much of their original mint luster, with a few hints of golden-tan toning. A few light planchet adjustment marks are evident on Liberty's hair and the rims, but an obverse rim dent at 5:30 is the only post-striking mark of note. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 12 in 50, 53 finer (6/13).
