1831 Quarter Eagle, Proof
Pleasing Obverse
1831 $2 1/2 -- Reverse Damage -- NGC Details. Proof. BD-1, R.7 as a Proof. Sole die pair for the year. In Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, Dannreuther provides a corollary to the usual approach to the proof-business strike divide, that proof is not so much about "method of manufacture" (the Guide Book's definition) but state of mind. The same applies to almost any possible early gold proof. Instead, the process for weighing the "proof-ness" of an early gold coin runs on two scales, the judgments of individual collectors who stack up small details in their minds and the macro-level consensus of those judgments, whether of the marketplace as a whole or the graders at a major service.

On the micro-level, this coin has numerous characteristics pointing to true proof status, rather than it being merely a prooflike business strike, and the graders at NGC concur that this coin is a no-doubt proof. Both sides show contrast, the obverse more so, with distinct reflectivity in all fields despite the numerous small contact marks that add up to the "Reverse Damage" designation on this coin's NGC holder. A strike-through thread between stars 1 and 2 suggests recently polished dies, while the uncommonly bold detail on an eagle underlined by a partial wire rim is further testimony. Though impaired, this remains an important proof representative of the Capped Head to Left, Reduced Diameter quarter eagle, which is very rare as a type, i.e. with all dates aggregated.
