Description:
1888 Three Dollar Gold , PR63 Cameo
291 Pieces Struck, Many Not Distributed
1888 $3 PR63 Cameo PCGS. The Guide Book lists a mintage figure of 291 pieces for the 1888 proof three dollar gold piece, but the issue is more difficult to locate than that generous total suggests. Perhaps a larger-than-average number of coins went unsold and were melted after the end of the year. Only 5,000 business-strike examples were produced in 1888, as the coins were not needed in the national economy, and the denomination was discontinued after the following year.

The present coin is a delightful Select specimen with well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of softness on the wreath. The frosty devices stand out boldly against the reflective fields with a pleasing cameo appearance. The lemon-yellow surfaces show a few minor hairlines and contact marks, none worthy of individual mention. Population: 7 in 63 Cameo, 16 finer (7/13).
