1797 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU Details
Heraldic Eagle, Elusive BD-3 Variety
1797 $10 Large Eagle -- Scratched -- NCS. AU Details. BD-3, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. The Heraldic Eagle reverse replaced the Small Eagle design part way through the year in 1797. An estimated mintage of 10,940 pieces was accomplished, with three die varieties known for the date and type. The coin offered here represents the rare BD-3 variety, with the reverse stars arranged in an irregular cross pattern and a short thin neck on the eagle. The BD-3 probably accounted for 1,750-2,500 pieces of the reported mintage and no more than 40-50 examples survive in all grades. This same obverse die was used on all three varieties of the 1797 Heraldic Eagle ten, while the reverse was also used to coin both varieties of the 1798/7 eagle.

This still-attractive specimen shows AU sharpness on the design elements and the surfaces retain much original mint luster. A few cross-hatched scratches on the portrait constitute the damage noted on the holder, mostly hidden in the hair. Otherwise the fields are lightly abraded, with a few faint planchet adjustment marks at the upper reverse rim.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25ZY, PCGS# 8559)
