1945-S Half Dollar, MS63
Struck on an El Salvador 25 Centavo Planchet
1945-S 50C Walking Liberty Half -- Struck on an El Salvador 25 Centavo Planchet -- MS63 NGC. Large S. According to the Whitman reference 100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins, the Walking Liberty half "is the second-scarcest series for major mint-error coins" with "only two known that are struck on foreign planchets." The other such piece, a 1943-S half on a Peruvian half sol, is offered elsewhere in the present auction as part of the Geyer Family Collection. The U.S. struck 25 centavos for El Salvador dated 1943 and 1944 (KM-136), and apparently a planchet lodged in a hopper and ended up struck sometime later between half dollar dies. Fortunately, its unusual appearance caused it to be set aside prior to circulation. Lustrous with a hint of tan toning and one small dig (likely made prior to leaving the mint) above the I in LIBERTY. Most of the date and mintmark are clear. The rims and portions of the centers are lightly brought up. Photographed on page 208 of Mike Byers' World's Greatest Mint Errors.
From The Geyer Family Collection.
