1850-O Twenty Dollar, AU50
First-Year New Orleans Issue
1850-O $20 AU50 PCGS. CAC. The 1849 pattern pieces and 1850 launch of the new twenty dollar denomination represented the large end of the circulating gold denominations in America, while the also-new gold dollars introduced in 1849 represented the small end. The impetus for both was the vast supplies of newly mined California gold. The hub for the 1850-dated double eagles was slightly different from the 1849, the unique example now in the Smithsonian Institution. The 1850 New Orleans double eagle were struck to the extent of 141,000 coins, about one-eighth the total made in Philadelphia; the 1850-O issue has perennial popularity as a first-year type and a mintmarked issue. The present orange-gold piece shows a scattering of small marks and light field chatter consistent with the grade, but considerable luster and great eye appeal remain. Population: 20 in 50, 40 finer (9/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 268G, PCGS# 8903)
