Description:
1799 B-6, BB-162 Dollar, AU50
From the Jules Reiver Collection
1799 $1 7x6 Stars AU50 PCGS. B-6, BB-162, R.3. Ex: Jules Reiver Collection. Stars 1, 13 distant, star 7 close, star 8 closest; TA in STATES touch clouds. Reiver die state b. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse of this variety. Here is a delightful example for the collector, the surfaces retain some of the original luster, and the coin is flashy. Fully struck by the dies and well preserved, with minimal signs of handling. The die state is later than often seen, with a die crack down through STAT to below ED, another light crack down through the second E, crack left of OF, another crack down through OF to wing, and another crack down AMER to the lower leaf pairs in the branch. While not as rare as once thought, this variety is difficult to locate this nice. A great coin for the variety specialist. Described in the Spies catalog as "A choice Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated, pale iridescent toning. Rarity 5."
Ex: Stack's W. Earl Spies Sale (December, 1974) lot 121; Jules Reiver Collection (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 23566.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24X7, PCGS# 6878)
