Description:
1794 NC-4, B-1b Cent, Good 4
Head of 1793, Edge of 1794
The Finer of Two Known
1794 1C Head of 1793 Good 4 NGC. S-17b (NC-4), B-1b, R.8. Our EAC Grade AG3. Ex: Mervis Collection. 1794 Edge Device. Breen Die State III as described for S-17a. The extremely rare subvariety for this die pair has the edge device of 1793 with the stem and point of the leaf pointing upward in relation to the letters. C. Douglas Smith identified this subvariety in 1950, and the second example (Fair 2) was discovered almost half a century later in 1996. No others have been located.

Although both sides of this piece show moderate, old corrosion, the attractive surfaces exhibit deep olive with a few areas of darker steel, most notably in the left obverse field. The portrait is outlined with a full date on the obverse, although LIBERTY is mostly absent. The reverse has much of the wreath detail remaining, with more than half the letters still visible.
Ex: John K. Borcky (Thomas L. Elder, 6/1935), lot 352; Walter Garrabrant (Stack's, 11/1949), lot 361; C. Douglas Smith (9/15/1952); Dr. William H. Sheldon (4/19/1972); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/23/1992); Eric Streiner (8/13/1992); Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (Superior, 1/1996), lot 23; Dan Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 29.
