Description:
1796 NC-1, B-29 Cent, Fine 12
Third Finest Known per Noyes
1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 Fine 12 NGC. NC-1, B-29, R.6. Our EAC Grade VG8. Breen Die State II. Die state data tells us that this variety was struck between states I and II of the S-92 variety. Walter Breen suggested that the reverse die for S-92 was replaced with this new reverse while being repaired, and returned to press for further use. In the meantime, only a small number of cents were produced from this die pair. Perhaps 20 of these have been identified, with this example tied for fourth finest known. It is not known who discovered this variety or when; however, it was listed in Ebenezer Gilbert's reference, published in 1909. Half a century later when Sheldon published Penny Whimsy in 1958, only five more had been located. This lovely cent has above average surfaces for the grade, with only faint abrasions and minor corrosion. A small rim bruise is present at 7 o'clock. Bland and Noyes each grade this piece VG8. Bland lists it as tied for fourth finest and Noyes says third finest known.
