Description:
1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR63
Popular Snow-9 Variant
1856 1C PR63 PCGS. Snow-9. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was initially issued as a pattern, designated Judd-180 in the standard pattern reference, to test the new small size, design, and copper-nickel composition of the proposed cent. These coins proved so popular with collectors that restrikes were made to satisfy the rising demand in later years. Both proof and regular-issue formats were used, with the estimated proof mintage numbering about 1,500 pieces. Most proof examples, including the present coin, are from the Snow-9 dies, with a center dot under the right serif of the N in CENT.

This coin exhibits sharply detailed design elements and well-preserved surfaces that show a few hints of light brown toning mixed with the original red. The fields are typical of the issue, not deeply mirrored but with some slight reflectivity in many areas. This lot represents an important opportunity to acquire one of the iconic issues in the U.S. series.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 227A, PCGS# 2037)
