Description:
1856-S S.S. Central America Twenty, AU55
Lustrous and Beautifully Preserved
1856-S $20 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 17O. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 5625. No Serif, Left S. One of the high-quality 1856-S twenties salvaged from the ill-fated S.S. Central America -- a wonderfully detailed survivor among more than 1,000 examples of the date recovered from the shipwreck. This die pairing is one of 18 varieties that were identified when the treasure could be studied in detail. The No Serif refers to a missing upper-left serif on the U in UNITED. Left S describes the mintmark, which leans slightly left. Lustrous with few abrasions and remarkably smooth surfaces, this is a high-end AU and Choice for the grade. Housed in a special gold label PCGS holder confirming its shipwreck origin. Population: 8 in 55, 50 finer (1/14).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 2692, PCGS# 8919)
