Description:
The Only Known 1882-CC Specimen Morgan Dollar
1882-CC Specimen MS 64 NGC. This is probably the only known proof striking of the 1882-CC dollar. Its existence was unsuspected until November, 1980 when Bruce Amspacher sold the coin to Wayne Miller. The details of this transaction and a photograph of the coin are included in Miller's book The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook on page 213. We repeat the passage here, as it is an interesting story, and because we can add little substantive to what these experts have already pronounced on the subject.
"In November of 1980 Bruce Amspacher called to offer me a proof 1882-CC silver dollar. Since Bruce is one of the few people capable of distinguishing a proof from a deep-mirror prooflike business strike, I was intrigued. The price was outrageous, and there was nothing to suggest the possibility of the existence of a proof of this date. But after expressing considerable skepticism I told Bruce to ship the coin.
"This coin...is an obvious branch mint proof. Its chocolate brown toning does not obscure the deep-mirror proof surfaces, which are evident both in the field and the devices...There is a full, square rim around much of the circumference of the coin, both obverse and reverse. The coin has no bagmarks, but does exhibit a few hairlines which are largely hidden by the dark toning.
"In summary, this 1882-CC essentially fulfills the requirements for a branch mint proof Morgan dollar."
