Description:
Very Rare Proof 1847 Dollar
1847 PR 64 PCGS. A rare proof Seated dollar and only the second we have offered over the past several years. It is estimated that only 20-30 proofs were struck, and of course, far fewer exist today. A number of deceptive prooflike business strikes are known, and the presence of these pieces clouds the estimated number of proof survivors as many of these prooflike examples have been offered in the past as legitimate proof strikings. In addition to being certified, this piece "carries its own credentials." It is an unmistakable proof whose fields are deeply reflective, the rims are broad, and all striking details are fully brought up. The obverse is diagnostically correct also with the positioning of the date in perfect alignment with the dentils as listed in Breen (1977). The diagnostic die scratch is not apparent on the reverse, but this was probably effaced by die polishing in the mint. Deeply toned throughout with a uniform layer of cobalt-blue patina. However, when held beneath a light, one notices undertones of red and sea-green coloration faintly visible. The depth of color tends to obscure the light hairlining one sees with magnification, evidence of an old cleaning. Of the greatest importance to the dollar specialist and/or collector of pre-1858 proofs. Population: 1 in 64, none are finer (9/95). (NGC ID# 24ZX, PCGS# 6988)
