Description:
Lower Condition Census 1869-S Ten-Dollar
1869-S AU 50 PCGS. Very rare with only a handful known in all grades, the 1869-S had a mintage of only 6,430 pieces. Breen terms this date "prohibitively rare EF." In Akers' survey of auctions over almost a 40-year period he recorded only 32 appearances in all grades, only one of which was an AU with two uncirculated pieces. According to the most recent data from the major certification services, this piece is tied with several others at the bottom of the condition census (if one considers that to be composed of the top five best coins, not six). This is an unquestionably original coin that has rich reddish patina surrounding the devices on each side with tiny portions of mint luster still in evidence as well. A bit softly struck. The surfaces are lightly abraded, the most obvious mark is a long scratch below the left (facing) wing of the eagle. (NGC ID# 264S, PCGS# 8656)
