Description:
Superb Cameo Proof 1865 Quarter Eagle--One of Only 25 Minted
1865 PR 66 Cameo NGC. The rarity of the proof 1865 quarter eagle is only overshadowed by the even rarer business strikes of this date. Only 25 proofs were struck in this final year of the Civil War, and today estimates of survivors vary from a low of 8-10 (Akers) to 13 to 15 possibly remaining (Taglione).
This is a superb, cameoed piece and is one of the finest examples known of the few remaining proofs that are still identifiable as such. The mirrors go absolutely black when angled just so beneath a light. The devices have thick mint luster and they appear to "float" above the unfathomable mirrored fields. Close examination reveals a few tiny planchet flakes out of the fields, but these are very small and really have no impact on the overall visual appeal of the coin. A very light, lilac tinted haze can be vaguely made out around the obverse stars. A splendid, early proof of unimprovable quality. Population: 2 in 66, none are finer (4/98). (NGC ID# 287K, PCGS# 7891)
