Description:
The Classic Rarity 1875 Proof Ten--Tied For Finest Known
1875 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. The undisputed key to the With Motto series and one of the rarest and most coveted of all U.S. coins, regardless of denomination. Only 100 business strikes and 20 proofs were produced. Probably no more than 5-6 business strikes remain along with 7-8 proofs, two of which are in museums. This piece is currently tied for finest known with one other PR 64, a PCGS coin. The golden-orange surfaces show light hairlining in the fields, but the depth of reflectivity is full and undiminished on each side, and the strongly contrasting creamy-golden devices provide a sharp cameo contrast. The striking details are just a bit soft on the hair curls, star radials, and the fletchings of the upper arrow on the reverse. Identifiable by a pair of contact marks in the obverse field by stars 4 and 5, and a tiny alloy spot in the middle of the D in UNITED on the reverse. Struck from the same reverse die as the 1874 as evidenced by flaking, probably caused by die rust, in the left field between the leftmost leaf and the left (facing) wing. Of the utmost rarity, this piece will most likely achieve the highest price of any of the Trompeter tens in this long and impressive run.
Ex: Dallas and Newport Beach Sale (Heritage, 6/87), lot 4462, where it realized $58,000. (NGC ID# 28FD, PCGS# 8815)
