Description:
1843-C Small Date Quarter Eagle Rarity, MS 62 NGC
1843-C $2 1/2 Small Date MS 62 NGC. This coin was previously featured as lot 6150 in the William Miller Collection (HNAI, 2/99), where it was described as: "The 1843-C is the rarest Charlotte quarter eagle. Only 2,988 pieces were produced, and of that number it has been estimated that today no more than 50-60 coins are extant in all grades, with most of those grading VF or lower. This is the finest example known of this very rare and highly respected issue. Struck from the latest die state, the obverse crack is heavy from the point of the bust to the rim, and the bulge from the buckled die is quite pronounced. The striking details on the obverse are well defined, as always seen, with almost no loss of detail on the reverse, as usually not seen. The surfaces have taken on an attractive reddish hue over the light, natural green-gold color of the coin, and the fields show a faint semi-reflective glimmer beneath the patina. A wire rim is noticeable on the left side of the obverse. The surfaces are peppered with numerous small abrasions that are consistent with the grade..." To this thorough description, we add that a small abrasion on the eagle's face just behind the beak is important as a future pedigree identifier.
Ex: William Miller Collection (HNAI, 2/99), lot 6150. (PCGS# 7729)
