Description:
Second Finest Certified 1841-D Half Eagle
1841-D $5 MS 64 PCGS. Small D. Winter 5-D. Die State I. The 1841-D is one of the more easily encountered D-mint fives in circulated grades, up to and including a couple dozen pieces in AU. Only a few Uncirculated coins are known, however, with fewer than 10 examples believed extant. This is a solid Condition Census coin that exhibits rich luster, the fields being shimmering and semi-prooflike with a particularly eye appealing yellow-gold tint. The devices show virtually complete definition on each side, even sharper than is often seen on this generally well produced issue. Clear repunching on the date is further evidence of an early die state. A tiny planchet flake to the right of star 12, joining the denticles, is in a similar location to a planchet depression on our 1996 ANA piece, but they are in fact different examples. Only the amazing James Stack piece, certified as MS 65 by PCGS, is known to exceed the quality of the presently offered '41-D. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer (11/99). (NGC ID# 25SR, PCGS# 8204)
