Description:
Very Rare 1879 Cameo Proof Ten, PR64
1879 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. Like the other proof gold denominations from this year, the 1879 ten dollar had an original mintage of only 30 pieces. However, unlike the other denominations, the ten dollar is much rarer. Only five proof eagles are known today. Of this already small number, one is impounded in the Smithsonian Institution as part of the U.S. Mint Collection and another is part of the American Numismatic Society's holdings. The final three pieces are currently in private hands and are, therefore, the only 1879 proof eagles available to modern collectors. This piece is deeply mirrored with rich orange-gold patina overall and intense mint frost on the devices which produces a profound cameo effect on each side. A few light hairlines account for the grade, but we see no other surface flaws on the obverse or reverse. Exceptional quality.
From the Genaitis Collection of 1879 Coinage. (NGC ID# 28FH, PCGS# 8819)
