Description:
Very Rare 1872 PR64 Three Dollar, Original Mintage 30 Pieces
1872 $3 PR64 PCGS. The proof 1872 had a combined business strike and proof delivery of only 2,030 pieces, only 30 of which were proofs. Of these 30 proofs originally produced, it is unlikely that more than half that number are extant today, many of which are unfortunately impaired. This is a lovely piece that is very similar to the coin we sold in our 1998 FUN Sale. Like that coin, this one also has a tiny planchet flake out of the left obverse field. The fields are deeply mirrored and each side has a significant overlay of reddish patina. An outstanding example of this very rare proof issue. Population: 6 in 64, 2 finer (3/02). (NGC ID# 28AC, PCGS# 8035)
