Description:
Extraordinary 1800 Eagle Rarity, MS63 Preservation
1800 $10 MS63 NGC. B. 1-A, Taraszka-23, the only known dies, R.4. The 1800 has an original mintage of just 5,999 coins, and survivors are rarer than those of the 1795, 1797 Heraldic Eagle, 1799, 1801, and 1803 deliveries. The 1796 and 1804 are rarer, although just barely. The present example is considerably finer than the typically offered VF-AU survivor. The otherwise frosty textured surfaces exhibit modest, yet appreciable hints of brightness in the fields. The color is a rich, reddish-gold shade with a tiny copper tinged spot concealed within the reverse shield. All features are uncommonly well struck for a product of the early Philadelphia Mint with the exception of the left and right obverse denticles, the latter due to the presence of adjustment marks (as produced) outside stars 11-13. Struck from a late die state, there are numerous branching obverse die cracks (also as struck) along the tops of the letters in LIBERTY. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention a pinscratch in the reverse field above the bundle of arrows within the eagle's left (facing) talon. We last offered an MS63 representative of this rare and conditionally challenging Eagle as lot 7599 in our June 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale. That coin, certified by PCGS, realized $44,850. Both major grading services have seen just 11 coins in MS63, with a mere five finer (3/02). (NGC ID# 2626, PCGS# 8563)
