Description:
One of the Great Mexican Gold Rarities
Ferdinand VI gold 8 Escudos 1747Mo-MF, KM148, Calico 596. As the fourth son of Felipe V, Ferdinand VI married Maria Barbara de Braganza, daughter of Joao V, King of Portugal and became King of Spain after his father's second reign in 1746 and remained in power until his death in 1759. Apparently, no gold 8 Escudos were coined in Spain, so the Iberian Peninsula was supplied with coins of this type by the American colonial mints, with the Mexico Mint being the main supplier. This first type was struck only in 1747 and features a larger armored bust of the King whose facial features are more crude than the subsequent types. The reverse is similar to those 8 Escudos of Felipe V. The specimen presented here is in Choice AU condition with a softer strike on the obverse, mainly on the lower hair and in very near mint state on the reverse with nice toning on the legend. An extremely rare coin that will certainly appeal to the most advanced collector.
