Choice UNC Aureus of Aelius, Caesar
Aelius. Caesar, A.D. 136-138. AV aureus (19 mm). Rome, A.D. 137. Bare-headed and draped bust right / Pietas standing right, holding box of perfumes and sacrificing over altar. RIC 439b; Calicó 1447. Choice Unc. NGC. Ex John Whitney Walter Collection (Stack's, 29 November 1990), 46. Reportedly found in India. The Stack's catalogue of the spectacular Walter collection mentions that "[the] foundation of the collection was this coin. Mr. Whitney felt if Roman gold coins could be as beautiful as this one, then a collection would be all the more beautiful." For a comparable coin that sold recently, see Tkalec (28 February 2007), 39, which realized CHF 95,000 (= $77,800 at the time of sale) excluding buyer's premium on a presale estimate of CHF 30,000. A second specimen of comparable grade but with a misshapen flan sold in Goldberg 41 (27 May 2007), 2922, for $57,500 excluding buyer's premium on a presale estimate of $15,000-20,000.
