Description:
Carthaginian Spain. Time of Hannibal, ca. 221-208 BC. AR ¼ shekel (1.79 gm). Carthago Nova, ca. 218-209 BC. Laureate bust of Melqart (with features of Hannibal?) left, club over far shoulder / African elephant advancing right, ground line, dotted border. Robinson-6c, plate II, SNG British Museum 989. CNH-14. Rare, deeply struck, and with a detailed, high-relief portrait of exquisite style. A few light scratches in fields, otherwise extremely fine.

Although produced at a different mint than the previous two pieces, this coin is part of the same denominational series and carries a portrait that, while superficially different than the man (or god) depicted on the previous lots, incorporates many of the same idiosyncratic features, notably the hooked nose, heavy browline, deep-set eye, pronounced chin and and long sideburn.
