Description:
Rare Prow-Left Aes Grave
Anonymous. Circa. 240-225 BC. AE as (296.67 gm).
Rome mint, Liberal standard. Bearded head of Janus on raised central disk / Prow of war galley left, mark of value I above, all on raised central disk. Crawford 36/1. Thurlow-Vecchi 57. Haeberlin, Aes Grave, Tafel 20, 4 (these dies). Very rare full liberal standard with prow left! With a beautiful multi-hued green patina. Nearly extremely fine.

From the Rubicon Collection.

Bradbury Thurlow and Italo Vecchi, in "Italian Cast Coinages" (London, 1979) record only 80 aes grave asses of the full liberal standard with prow left, versus nearly 1,200 with prow right. Regarding the disparity, they note: "The significance of prow left vs. prow right has been much debated. The prow left series of liberal standard is comparatively scarce. It shows every sign of being contemporary with the latest (and lightest) prow-right pieces and may represent the design of an individual moneyer, a change in format just prior to the reduction to semi-liberal standard (in which all pieces are prow left), or an issue intended for provincial circulation. For what it may be worth, the forepart of the galley in prow-left specimens carries a different kind of superstructure from those often found on prow-right specimens."
