Description:
Conquests in India
GRECO-BACTRIAN KINGDOM. Demetrius I (ca. 200-185 BC). AR tetradrachm (16.92 gm). Diademed and draped bust of Demetrius I right, wearing headdress in the form of an Indian elephant's head / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ, nude Heracles standing facing, crowning himself with right hand and holding club in left, lion skin draped over left forearm, ΦΙΛΩ monogram in inner left field. SNG Bopearachchi Series 1 F. Obverse struck in high relief. Well centered and struck in high relief on an exceptionally broad flan, with full dotted borders. Choice extremely fine.

The elephant-skin headdress sported by Demetrius on this remarkable series of coins serves the dual purpose of evoking Alexander the Great (who is shown wearing a similar headdress on coins of Ptolemy I) and trumpeting Demetrius' own victories in northern India, which greatly expanded the Greco-Roman realm.
