Description:
An Excellent "Coarse Beard" Burgers Pond
Republic gold Burgers Pond 1874, KM1.1, Hern-B2, Fr-1a, Coarse Beard variety, digit "8" double struck, reeded edge, AU55 NGC, slight wear and a few abrasions, bold strike with exceptionally fine detail within the reverse shield as well as a crisp portrait of T.F. Burgers, with no roller lines. The multiple tiny abrasions on the fields suggest that this may have been carried as a pocket piece (see the historical commentary given under the accompanying lot for the Fine Beard specimen). The occasion of the creation of this variety, which is many times rarer than the Fine Beard, was the cracking and then the disintegration of the original obverse die, used at the Heaton Mint. A number of patterns in other metals had been created by Heaton in anticipation of obtaining a contract to mint these coins for the ZAR, and when the first obverse die broke another was simply selected, with a variant engraving of Burgers' beard. It would be decades before the collecting world realized that two varieties existed. It is widely believed that just 142 pieces of the Coarse Beard variety were struck, before the ore supplied to the mint by Burgers was used up. Some 837 pieces were struck of both varieties. The presently offered specimen is exceptionally fine and a miraculous survivor of more than a century of wars and rough handling. Very rare indeed, and in great demand.
