Description:
A Unique Brazilian Copper
Jose I copper 40 Reis 1752, KM184.1, VF Details NGC (bent), nice original toning, the "bent" notation by NGC is not readily visible in the holder. Slightly double-struck obverse legends. Unique date, unlisted in the SCWC and Russo! Struck in Lisbon without mintmark.

This incredible and unique coin was first described by the great German-Brazilian numismatist Julius Meili in his catalog "Das Brasilianische Geldwesen - Die Munzen der Colonie Brasilien" of 1897 (page 133). The coin reappeared in 1905 when the collection of Mr. Cyro Carvalho de Lisboa was offered by J. Schulman in Amsterdam. Lot #802 was sold by 50 Dutch Guilders. To put this price in prospective, a gold 3200 Reis of 1780-B was sold in the same auction for 26 Guilders.
Since then, only Kurt Prober makes mention of the coin in his book "Catalogo de Moedas Brasileiras de Cobre" of 1957 on page 19. Prober describes it as "Unique" and as a possible pattern. He also describes the current owner as "Unknown". Since then, catalog authors have failed to mention this coin likely for a lack of proper research. Regardless, here it is, over 50 years after it was last mentioned by Prober!
