Description:
Superlative 1908 Matte Proof Indian Half Eagle
1908 $5 PR66 PCGS. Absolutely stunning quality in a matte proof gold coin--the surfaces appear to be perfectly preserved. There is a shallow depression on the reverse behind the eagle's head, but this appears to have been struck into the coin as matte granules overlay this thread-like "defect." Otherwise, we see no shiny spots or abrasions on either side.
Always popular as the first year of issue, it is reported that 167 proofs were struck of the 1908 half eagle. However, it is not clear that all these were distributed; and in fact, it is certain that an unspecified number were melted on January 2, 1909 after 100 gold proof sets were assembled. Despite the relatively high mintage and number of proof sets assembled, the 1908 five dollar does not appear to be significantly more available than other dates in the series. We estimate that perhaps 40-55 pieces may still be extant in all grades. Of that number few can rival the technical preservation and overall eye appeal of this magnificent coin. Population: 12 in 66, 2 finer (3/04).(#8539) (Registry values: N7079) (PCGS# 8539)
