Description:
1915 S-Less Panama-Pacific Half in Copper, Judd-1962
1915 50C Panama-Pacific Half Dollar, Judd-1962 (previously Judd-1792), Pollock-2030, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. Die trial for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition half dollar, struck before the S-mintmark was added. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Like the silver coin above, fewer than four examples are confirmed of this rare 20th century pattern. The chestnut-brown surfaces show an occasional accent of original, light red patina around the margins and an occasional light speckling of carbon on each side. Because of the hardness of the metal, compared to silver, the striking details are not as well defined on this copper piece as it is on the silver or gold coins. This is most evident on Liberty's cap and the feather details on the breast and legs of the eagle. The surfaces overall are similar to the silver pattern above with the matte-like texture in both the fields as well as over the devices, in addition to the numerous die polishing marks seen in the fields of both coins. According to the Pollock reference, Farran Zerbe, who was involved with the coining and distribution of these coins, was quoted by Walter Breen as saying that specimens "may have been struck at the Philadelphia Mint by the instructions of the Secretary of the Treasury (William McAdoo), who was a coin collector."
