Description:
Scarce 1865 Copper-Nickel Cent, Judd-406
1865 1C One Cent, Judd-406, Pollock-475, Low R.6, PR65 PCGS. Regular die trials issue of 1865, struck in a copper-nickel (76 percent copper, 24 percent nickel) alloy with a plain edge. The alloy differs from the 88% copper, 12% nickel alloy of the 1859-1864 copper-nickel issues. Although labeled by PCGS as Judd-406, the new edition of Judd states (page 17) that "Copper-Nickel" (Judd-404) refers to an 88%-12% alloy, while "Nickel" (Judd-406) refers to a 75%-25% alloy. A sharply detailed specimen with innumerable die striations that are a bit more noticeable on the obverse. Steel-gray in color with a few trivial specks of carbon in the vicinity of the date.
