Description:
Rare, Choice Sandblast Proof Hawaiian Half Dollar
1928 50C Hawaiian PR64 PCGS. The Hawaiian Half Dollar is one of the keys to the U.S. Silver Commemorative set. The Act of March 7, 1928 authorized the Mint to produce 10,000 examples that would be sold to help finance the Captain Cook Memorial Collection in the Archives of Hawaii. The mintage was divided between 9,958 business strikes and 50 sandblast proofs. In the 1981 Encyclopedia of United States Silver and Gold Commemorative Coins: 1892-1954, Anthony Swiatek and Walter Breen list the original owners of all 50 presentation pieces. Unfortunately, the pedigree of the present near-Gem has been lost, but it is, nonetheless, an immensely important coin for the Commemorative specialist. The surfaces display an argent-gray sheen with microscopic granularity from the method of production. A thin coating of mustard-yellow color overlays about half of the obverse and most of the reverse. There are no handling marks that would seem to bar this attractive example from an even higher grade, although a multitude tiny black specks, resembling finely ground pepper are seen on the obverse. A rare, seldom offered example that should elicit spirited bidding from all commemorative specialists. Population: 6 in 64, 0 finer (3/04).
Ex: FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/02), lot 8752, which realized $33,350.
