Description:
Rare Proof 1891 Double Eagle
1891 $20 PR61 Deep Cameo NGC. This is a very rare date with a total mintage of 1,390 business strikes and 52 proofs. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen estimated a total population of just 12 business strikes and only 15 to 18 proofs, for a total of 27 to 30 coins. Deeply mirrored with rich green-gold surfaces and highly lustrous devices. This is a splendid cameo proof, highly attractive, with only a few minor imperfections. Notably, a patch of hairlines are visible in the upper left obverse field, from some type of abrasive. This issue has been undervalued in the market for many years, and we believe even today should trade at higher price levels. Compare the current market values for this issue with some of the rare Philadelphia Mint issues of the 1880s, coins of similar rarity.
