Description:
Finest Certified 1914-D Lincoln Cent
1914-D 1C MS66 Red NGC. Walter Breen noted a hoard of at least 700 Mint State '14-D Lincoln's that was discovered in the early 1950s. Most of those coins must have been in lower Mint State grades, however, as gem quality examples remain extremely rare today. This MS-66 Red is tied for finest certified at either PCGS or NGC. Both surfaces combined have only certified eight examples, five at NGC and three at PCGS. Another of the five just appeared in our Pittsburgh ANA Sale a month ago. This is a highly unusual example with rich orange luster and none of the darker toning that is almost always seen on this date. The obverse is sharply struck and the reverse is nearly a full strike. A few tiny spots are noted on each side with magnification, and are virtually invisible otherwise. This Premium Gem is a delight to behold, and will certainly please the successful bidder.
The illustration of the Denver Mint is from a postcard with a postmark of July 17, 1915, and is an excellent representation of the Mint at the time this coin was struck. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (8/04).(#2473) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 22BH, PCGS# 2473)
