Description:
Ted Naftzger's 1794 S-17a Cent
1794 1C Head of 1793 VF Details NCS. Fine 15 EAC. S-17a, Die State III, Low R.5. Edge Style of 1793. The sharpness grade approximates VF25. Maris called this the "Tilted 4" variety, but Sheldon thought a better description would be the "Wide Straight Date." Dr. Edward Maris published a monograph on the 1794 cents in 1869, with a second edition in 1870. In these references, he provided fanciful names for each of the varieties that he described. This is one of the most popular and easy to recognize of all 1794s and it is also one of the most difficult to locate problem-free. As with most S-17a cents, this piece displays streaky coloration, most likely from the last of the Gourdon copper used in the previous year. Moderate porosity is seen on the obverse, and there is evidence of light planchet flaking as well. There are several small to medium sized edge nicks, most of which are on the obverse. Sixth finest known for the variety. NCS Environmental Damage.
Ex: Bruno Crossfield; Willard Blaisdell (12/56); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/75) at EAC; Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (Superior, 9/86), lot 23; Darwin Palmer; George Ewing. Accompanied by Ted Naftzger's envelope, on the back which is signed "Best wishes to Wes Rasmussen - Ted Naftzger, Ft. Mitchell, KY, 4/20/95."(#1362) (Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 223N, PCGS# 1362)
