Description:
1839 Head of 1838 Liberty Ten Dollar in Mint State
1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters MS61 NGC. Although not generally collected as a separate type, most likely due to its rarity, the Head of 1838 differs substantially from its Head of 1840 counterpart. The bust truncation has a pronounced curve, and a swirl of hair covers all but the earlobe. The portrait appears to lean forward, and the coronet tip is below the sixth star. Despite these readily observable differences, this variety is often referred to as the Large Letters, because the reverse letters are indeed slightly larger than on the Head of 1840 type. The right edge of the 9 in the date is recut, and for many years this was considered an 1839/8 overdate, although the absence of a left side closing loop prevents such a conclusion. Although more available than the introductory 1838 issue, the 1839 is scarce in all grades and rare in Mint State. A sharply struck piece with abundant luster and no heavy abrasions. Population: 4 in 61, 1 finer (12/04).(#8576) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 262E, PCGS# 8576)
