Description:
Important Mint State 1799 Half Eagle
1799 $5 Small Stars Reverse MS62 NGC. Breen-6435, B. 3-E, R.4. On the obverse of this variety, the final 9 is sharply doubled. The reverse has 13 small and somewhat distorted stars in the Constellation. This is a rather late die state with several die cracks on both sides. The reverse die has also been lapped, as evidenced by considerable missing feather detail in the left (facing) wing. Several die marriages are known among half eagles of 1799, although few have survived in Mint State grades. This is probably the most plentiful of all the 1799 varieties, with about 10 Mint State examples known.
The late die state of this example is characterized by several die cracks and other die defects. The obverse has a heavy crack from the border to the lowest hair curl at 7 o'clock. Another crack from the cap runs through the B to the border. Yet another connects Liberty's forehead to the tail of the letter R. Other lesser die cracks are also visible. A heavy line connects the cap to base of L in LIBERTY, and this is the result of a clash mark. The surfaces are fully lustrous with satiny greenish-gold color and only slight abrasions. The fields are somewhat reflective, although this cannot be called a prooflike example. It is highly desirable, and is almost certainly one of the five or six finest known.
