Description:
Impressive 1870 Standard Silver Half Dollar, PR63 Brown
1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-960 (actually Judd-958, Pollock-1109), High R.6, PR63 Brown NGC. Standard Silver design showing Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. The reverse reads 50 CENTS 1870 in the center and is surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn. Struck in copper with a plain (?) edge. The insert for this pattern contains an important mechanical error. A Judd-960 is a Standard Silver half dollar struck in aluminum with a plain edge. This piece is obviously not aluminum. It is copper. The insert further states it is PR63 Brown, which would further affirm that it is a copper striking. A Judd-960 has a plain edge, so if we assume that the edge designation is correct, then this piece should properly be classed as a Judd-958: a copper striking with plain edge. The surfaces display bright teal coloration over each side with a couple of reddish remnants of the original surface still showing around the margins. If there is any doubt about the metal this pattern was struck in, a short, shallow staple scratch is located just above the left side of the scroll on the obverse, revealing a narrow streak of raw copper.(#61206) (PCGS# 61206)
