Description:
Extremely Rare Choice Proof 1819/8 Cent
1819/8 1C PR64 Brown NGC. Ex: Pittman. N-1, High R.1 as a business strike, but R.8 in proof format. This piece previously appeared in Bowers and Merena's 2003 Baltimore auction, where it was described as, "Full mirror fields and a beautiful medium tan with traces of stunning iridescence in the blue and violet range. As expected, the devices are boldly struck, with the curls on Liberty, stars nearby, and even the edge denticles quite sharp. Similar on the reverse with full details on the leaves and ribbons save for a hint of softness on the uppermost portions. Close examination will note a few trivial pin lines and specks of verdigris or carbon, but the coin remains in splendid condition. A fine engraving line is noted at the edge of the denticles which helped the die engraver line up this feature." To this description, we must add that the fields possess noticeable reflectivity, and that all pre-1820 proof Large Cents are extremely rare.
In the catalog of the first Pittman auction, David Akers states, "The only other known offering of a Proof 1819/8 Cent was Mougey:121, later appearing as Sleicher:1043. The Mougey coin may or may not be a different specimen from the DuPont coin offered here." Of course, the untraced Mougey piece might also simply be a well made business strike.
Ex: Beckwith Sale (S.H. Chapman, 4/23), lot 54; Anderson DuPont Sale (Stack's, 9/54), lot 568, which realized $70; John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One (David Akers, 10/97), lot 196, which realized $19,800; Baltimore ANA Auction (Bowers and Merena, 7/03), lot 177, which realized $31,050.(#81768) (Registry values: P5) (PCGS# 81768)
