Description:
Gem Cameo Proof 1886 Gold Dollar
1886 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. This is a remarkable Gem proof with amazing color. Both the obverse and the reverse have rich honey-gold mirrors glittering much as if it had just been struck. Extremely sharp with all letters of LIBERTY boldly defined. Some tiny lint marks and other miniscule surface flaws are strictly limited to pre-striking planchet imperfections and do not affect the grade in any manner. The fields are deeply mirrored with a pleasing, frosted appearance to the devices and lettering.
Original planchets, even when polished prior to striking proof coins, were far from being perfectly smooth. The majority of these tiny surface marks in the planchet were eliminated in the striking process, however, some still remained. In addition, tiny pieces of lint would adhere to the dies when workmen would wipe the dies with a cloth to remove particles adhering to the dies during the coinage process. Population: 12 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (6/05).(#87636)(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25EW, PCGS# 87636)
